Coppice Eco-Committee

Awards! We are pleased to announce that this September we achieved the Bronze Eco award for our school in recognition of our continuing Eco-friendly work. We hope to achieve the Silver award during January 2008.
What do we do? Coppice Eco-Committee has been formed to help our school become more environmentally aware and to respond to the ever increasing environmental issues our planet faces.
Who are we? Coppice Eco-Committee has a diversity of students, staff, caretakers and parent governors to ensure that the whole school is represented. We have an elected member from each class, Mr Bland (teacher), Caretaker (Mr Burrows) and a parent governor.
Our projects: We have set up a number of initial projects after conducting an informal environmental review of our school. There were some obvious projects that we could tackle immediately!
Paper recycling: We now have paper bins distributed throughout our school, including in each classroom and the school office. We have estimated that our class and office bins have our 50% less waste in!
Mobile phone recycling: We have set up a recycling scheme for mobile phones. We have put a box outside the school office for phone collection and we will receive approximately £3.00 for each phone we recycle. We have already collected 30 phones! So if you have an old phone you no longer use bring it in and help use raise some money for our funds. Thank you!
Gardening club and tree planting: We have been running a gardening club and through the trees for all scheme we planted 30 trees in the school grounds. These included Cherry and Rowan tress to provide food for wildlife. Gardening club has managed some flower beds will carry on next year.
Willow Dome:
At the beginning of January we will be building a Willow Dome on our school field. This will provide a great place for birds and insects, as well as a great place to play and shelter from the Sun during the long hot Heanor summers!
Future and ongoing projects include a bid to the playground partnership to create an outdoor classroom, planting a willow dome, a school waste audit, looking for further opportunities to teach environmental issues, rag rug making and more!
If you have any suggestions or ideas please let us know!
