Welcome to the Year 4 Website
As the nights draw in, our topic this half term is OUT IN THE COLD

Our geography focus will be about settlements. We will learn to use the eight compass directions, map symbols and grid references. We will research some of the similarities and differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic, including the kinds of animals that can be found at each. We will look at the Inuit way of life in the cold Arctic.

Then we will consider why some settlements have grown at certain locations, like London, and decide what we would need if we were to settle on another planet or imaginary world!
In science we will be learning about how to keep warm. We will be looking at melting and freezing and testing different materials to see how they can keep cold things cold. We will then investigate how materials can keep us warm so we can design the warmest spacesuit for our class spaceman.

We will also be learning how to use thermometers and understanding what temperature is. During some research in ICT lessons we will find out about the temperatures on other planets, how big they are, how long they take to orbit the sun and so on. All this information will help us to make and use databases.

In art, we will use images of rockets, aliens and outer space as inspiration for some printing work. We will explore the effects of using different objects to print with such as cotten reels, sponges and lego. We will look at the work of famous prints, such as by William Morris and design block prints for our spaceman's spacesuit. We will learn how to build up and add detail to our designs using combinations of different mediums.
Our PSHE topic this half term is 'Good to be Me'. We will also be doing some Anti-bullying work alongside International Education Week. Year 4 will be learning about Denmark (a country very close to the teacher's heart!) and will learn a bit out Danish culture, cuisine and crafts from Hans Christian Andersen to pastries and weaving.
MUSIC: Year 4 are now able to take their clarinets home. Please make sure that clarinets are back in school on Mondays ready for a practise lesson.

Please be aware that the clarinet must be put together in a particular way that avoids damaging the metal keys. The children have been taught how to do this. They are intended for the sole use of the children and any necessary repairs will be arranged by the school.
Literacy: Stories set in Imaginary Worlds followed by Recounts of cookery/D&T from Danish week and newspaper accounts of alien visitations!
Numeracy: pictographs, reading time, reading scales, multiplication and fractions.
Below are some FANTASTIC literacy, numeracy and science websites to support your learning!
