Welcome to Year 1!

Shine on Me

Through our topic work this half term we will be learning about light and dark and different light sources.  We will learn about lighthouses and become history detectives to find out why Grace Darling is famous.  We will look at the use of light in a range of religious festivals and light will provide a stimulus for our collage work when we produce our own 'starry night' collages.  We will be developing our word processing skills throughout our topic and will learn more about the different buttons in textease.  Our mapwork will involve us following directions around a lighthouse and we will be reading a range of Lighthouse Keeper stories and Owl stories.  This term we will also be busy rehearsing our Christmas production 'The Stars come out for Christmas' when we will be under the spotlight!

During the week commencing 16th November we will be completing a special week of activities to raise awareness of anti-bullying week and also to learn about life in a different culture/country.  The theme for anti-bullying week this year is 'stay safe in cyberspace' and will focus on cyberbullying.  Children will be taught what cyberbullying is and how to deal with it and we will be sending information to parents also.  More information can be found by visiting the website listed below.  The country that our class will be learning about during this week is 'Australia'.  The reason Australia was selected was because during our discussion about what they wanted to  learn through our new topic, a lot of children wanted to know about why it is night time in Australia when it is day time in England and they also had misconceptions about the sun and the moon relating to Australia, so during this week questions will be answered and misconceptions cleared up.  We will be learning about the location of Australia, currency, differences between England and Australia and highlight the dangers of looking at the sun.  We will compare nocturnal animals in England and Australia.  We will be looking at Aboriginal Art in the form of dot paintings and will produce our own 'Aboriginal Art' using both paint and ICT.  We will learn about didgeridoos and make our own and we will also learn to sing some traditional Australian songs.  We will dance to Waltzing Matilda and read and listen to traditional Australian stories.

During the last two weeks of this term we will be completing activites related to our trip to 'Beauty and the Beast' and will also be learning about Christmas and completing Christmas activities.

We will be doing PE on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays so please ensure that earrings are removed on these days and long hair is tied back.  Thankyou.
